Guest Lecture: “TL Dating for Geothermal Exploration”
Thermoluminescence (TL) dating is a method for determining the absolute age of rocks by measuring the intensity of solar radiation (UV) absorbed by the rock, which is recorded in the lattice electron structure of the rock’s crystalline components. There are several methods for dating rocks, including U-Pb dating, K-Ar dating, and carbon dating. Thermoluminescence (TL) dating has emerged as a highly promising alternative due to its lower costs, allowing for a broader and more cost-effective analysis of samples. TL dating has been applied in various fields such as archaeology, deformation structure analysis, mineral exploration, and geothermal exploration.
Regarding the application of TL dating in geothermal exploration, the Geological Engineering Study Program of the Faculty of Earth Technology and Energy (FTKE) Universitas Trisakti, in collaboration with the Geological Engineering Study Program of UPN Veteran Yogyakarta, organized a Sharing Knowledge event on the topic of “Thermoluminescence (TL) Dating for Geothermal Exploration.” The event featured Professor Isao Takashima from Akita University, Japan, who is a renowned expert in this field.
The Sharing Knowledge event took place on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, in Room AD-201, 2nd Floor, Building D at Universitas Trisakti. The event was highly interactive and conducive, attended by faculty members from FTKE and the Geological Engineering Study Program at Universitas Trisakti; Dr. Ir. Dwi Fitri Yudiantoro, M.T., from the Geological Engineering Program of UPN Veteran Yogyakarta; Amin Rinjani from PT. Geoservice, and geology students from Universitas Trisakti, especially those specializing in geothermal exploration.
The welcome and opening remarks were delivered by the Vice Dean 1 of FTKE, Dr. Ir. Suryo Prakoso, S.T., M.T. A momento was then presented to the guest speaker, Professor Isao Takashima, by the Head of the Geological Engineering Program, Dr. Ir. Suherman Dwi Nuryana, S.T., M.T., and another momento was presented to Dr. Ir. Dwi Fitri Yudiantoro, M.T. by the Deputy Head of the Geological Engineering Program, Muhammad Apriniyadi, S.Si, M.Sc. The event was moderated by Mira Meirawaty, S.T., M.T., a petroleum geology lecturer from Trisakti. Other attending lecturers included Dr. Ir. Afiat Anugrahadi, M.S., Dr. Ir. Dewi Syavitry, M.Sc., and Dr. Ir. Yarra Sutadiwiria, M.T.
Through this Sharing Knowledge event, the Geological Engineering Program and FTKE at Universitas Trisakti demonstrated their commitment to playing an active role in the development of the geothermal industry as one of Indonesia’s renewable energy alternatives. We hope that similar events will continue to be held, supporting the “Tridharma” of Higher Education in geothermal research.
